In this episode of Food Stories, the FareShare Greater Manchester podcast, we visit Emmaus Mossley to discover how surplus food is helping to create nutritious meals, build community and support people who have experienced homelessness.
Emmaus Mossley is one of FareShare Greater Manchester’s Community Food Members. Based in Mossley, the organisation provides a home and community for people who have experienced homelessness. The people who live and work there are known as Companions, and together they share responsibility for running the community.
During our visit, we head into the kitchen to meet Danny Gregson, Catering Manager, and Molly Ridgeway, who tell us about the role food plays in everyday life at Emmaus Mossley.
Much of the food used at Emmaus comes through FareShare Greater Manchester. This surplus food might otherwise go to waste, but through food redistribution it can instead become part of a nutritious meal shared by the Emmaus community.
We hear how the kitchen works with the food available, adapting menus and getting creative with surplus ingredients. We also meet some of the Companions to hear their experiences of life at Emmaus and what being part of the community means to them.
For Emmaus Mossley, food is about much more than simply putting a meal on the table. Sharing meals can provide routine, connection and a sense of belonging, while working together in the kitchen provides opportunities to develop skills and confidence.
This episode explores the powerful connection between food waste, food redistribution and community support, showing how good-to-eat surplus food can have an impact far beyond the kitchen.
